Bihar Calls for Women Farmers to Become Agricultural Entrepreneurs, Emphasises Skills and Market Access

The Bihar government has called for greater economic empowerment of women farmers by encouraging them to move beyond traditional cultivation and develop agricultural enterprises. The initiative highlights the importance of skill development, modern farming technology, access to government support schemes and stronger connections with markets.

Speaking at an event in Patna on October 15, 2026, Bihar Agriculture Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha urged women farmers to explore entrepreneurial opportunities that could help them increase their incomes, strengthen their financial independence and create employment in rural communities. The event marked Mahila Kisan Diwas and the International Year of the Woman Farmer 2026.

According to reporting by The Times of India, the minister said the government would support women through skills training, information about agricultural schemes and measures to strengthen their links with buyers and markets.

From Farming to Women-Led Agribusinesses

Women play an important role throughout India’s agricultural value chain, including sowing, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, livestock management and post-harvest processing. However, opportunities to convert their agricultural experience into independently owned businesses can be limited by restricted access to finance, equipment, training and reliable markets.

The Bihar initiative seeks to encourage women to explore activities beyond primary farming, including food processing, horticulture and mushroom cultivation. These businesses can allow farmers to add value to agricultural produce, diversify their income sources and build enterprises suited to local demand.

For example, women farmers could establish mushroom production units, process fruits and vegetables, produce packaged agricultural goods or organise collective marketing through self-help groups. Such activities can create opportunities for both self-employment and additional rural jobs.

Skill Development and Modern Farm Technology

Access to practical training and suitable agricultural equipment is an important part of improving women’s participation in agribusiness. At the Patna event, the agriculture minister emphasised the need to promote farm mechanisation and make small agricultural equipment more accessible to women farmers.

Appropriate machinery can reduce physically demanding work, improve operational efficiency and help women manage agricultural activities more effectively. Training in modern cultivation techniques, processing, packaging and business management can also help farmers improve the quality and marketability of their products.

Alongside technical knowledge, women-led enterprises need support in financial literacy, record-keeping, pricing and business planning. These capabilities can help farmers assess costs, manage working capital and make informed decisions about expanding their operations.

Stronger Market Connections and Government Support

Access to customers remains a major challenge for small agricultural businesses, particularly those operating in rural areas. Limited transportation, fragmented supply chains and dependence on intermediaries can reduce the returns farmers receive for their produce.

The Bihar government’s stated emphasis on market linkages seeks to help women farmers connect more effectively with buyers and identify opportunities to sell value-added products.

Self-help groups can also play an important role by enabling women to pool resources, access training, organise production and market their products collectively. Government livelihood programmes can complement these efforts through enterprise development support and links to wider distribution networks.

At the national level, the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana–National Rural Livelihoods Mission supports rural women through self-help groups and initiatives aimed at developing sustainable livelihoods and women-led enterprises. The Ministry of Rural Development’s National Campaign on Entrepreneurship also focuses on training, enterprise formalisation, digital market access and stronger buyer connections.

Women Farmers as Drivers of Rural Economic Growth

Encouraging women farmers to become entrepreneurs can contribute to broader rural development by creating additional income opportunities, strengthening local supply chains and supporting small businesses.

Agricultural processing, horticulture, mushroom cultivation and other farm-linked enterprises can help rural communities capture more value from agricultural production. Women-led businesses can also generate employment for other members of their communities and provide new opportunities for younger people interested in agribusiness.

However, sustainable progress will depend on more than training alone. Affordable finance, reliable infrastructure, access to equipment, business mentoring and consistent demand for products will be essential for women to establish and grow profitable enterprises.

Conclusion

Bihar’s call for women farmers to pursue agricultural entrepreneurship highlights the growing importance of economic independence and enterprise development in rural women’s empowerment.

By combining agricultural skills with modern technology, financial support and access to markets, women farmers can expand their role from agricultural producers to business owners and rural employers. Continued implementation of practical support measures will be important in turning these opportunities into sustainable livelihoods and long-term economic growth.
